More state funding announced to smooth over some rough roads

wxxinews

New York state is trying to smooth out the rough roads in some areas by allocating more money for paving this year.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced $128 million in new state funding to help improve roadways affected by this year’s harsh winter weather.

The funding will be split among 91 paving projects around the state, including nearly $13 million for 10 projects in the Finger Lakes.

Jordan Guerrin is a spokesman for the New York State Transportation Department. He says the recent big fluctuations in temperatures have exacerbated the pothole situation.

“We know with these intermittent and fluctuating temperatures, going from freezing to thawing, that causes some harsh conditions for our roadways, so this money is going to do wonders in helping us address those conditions and get some pavement projects out the door that we hadn’t planned for,” Guerrin told WXXI News.

He said this latest funding will provide paving for roads that were not already planned.

“We do have paving projects on our capital program that are coming up this year, such as Mount Read Boulevard, Lake Avenue, Empire Boulevard; those are a little bit more meticulously planned, they’re designed by our in-house designers, engineers. They usually include a little bit more than just resurfacing the roadway,” Guerrin said.

The paving work for the new projects will begin this spring and be completed later this year.

Here’s a list of the Finger Lakes paving projects that will benefit from the just-announced additional funding:

  • 1.8 million to resurface Route 237 from Route 33 to the Genesee/Orleans County Line in Genesee County.
  • $1.3 million to resurface Route 436 from the Wyoming/Livingston County Line to the Village of Nunda (West Village Line) in Livingston County.
  • $1.3 million to resurface Route 253 (Lehigh Station Road) from Route 15A to Route 65 in Monroe County.
  • $730,000 to resurface Route 19 from Route 104 to Route 18 in Monroe County.
  • $1 million to resurface Route 64 from Route 21 to Dugway Road in Ontario County.
  • $980,000 to resurface Route 98 from Puzzey Road to Route 31A in Orleans County.
  • $2.0 million to resurface Route 88 from Pearl Street to the Village of Sodus (South Village Line) in Wayne County.
  • $1.4 million to resurface Route 19 from Route 39 to Route 78 in Wyoming County.
