Haz-Mat crews put out chemical fire at Eastman Business Park

City of Rochester Fire Dept.

Rochester firefighters were called to a fire that required a ‘haz-mat’ response at Eastman Business Park on Tuesday morning.

It happened at about 9:15 a.m. at the 218 Technology Building, in a facility used by SiGNa, which is a tenant at the business park.

Fire officials say there was a 55 gallon drum of sodium that had a chemical reaction which caused it to ignite. Kodak says about a gallon of the liquid sodium had leaked. It happened while crews were doing maintenance on a piece of machinery.

The fire was put out with dry chemical extinguishers. The City of Rochester firefighters helped Kodak’s fire department deal with the situation.

The building was evacuated for a time and there were no injuries and authorities say there was no danger to the public.
