ESL issues $500,000 challenge for the United Way campaign

The United Way of Greater Rochester and the ESL Federal Credit union are announcing a $500,000  ESL “Give Back Challenge,” for next year's United Way Campaign.

ESL will match all new and increased donations to the United Way's Community Fund next year, up to a half-million dollars. Officials say this is one of the largest challenge grants and corporate donations in United Way's history.

Faheem Masood is president and CEO of ESL. He says making this challenge just makes sense for his organization.

“ESL is very connected to the Greater Rochester area, our prosperity, our future depends on the prosperity of Rochester and the Greater Rochester area. And we believe United Way does an excellent job what results oriented and evidenced based programs and services are needed,” Masood told WXXI News.

There's a tie-in between the two organizations. 100 years ago, George Eastman launched the War Chest, to raise money for local agencies serving war efforts, and that organization  has since evolved into United Way of Greater Rochester.

George Eastman also started Eastman Savings and Loan, which is now the ESL Federal Credit Union.

United Way of Greater Rochester is marking its 100 anniversary next year with a year-long fundraising campaign and various celebrations.
