The U.S. Postal Service has temporarily closed a processing and distribution facility in Rochester due to a package containing mercury that leaked on Tuesday.
That facility at 1700 Lyell Avenue does not provide services directly to customers, and spokesperson for the Postal Service, Karen Mazurkiewicz says there were no injuries. The facility, which processes packages and periodicals, was closed after elevated levels of mercury were detected.
About 350 people work there and they will be assigned to other tasks during the shutdown. There was no word yet on when it will be reopened.
Mail that is normally processed at that Lyell Avenue facility will be processed at some other postal facilities in Rochester, Buffalo and Pittsburgh. But there is some mail currently in the facility that cannot be moved until the cleaning and testing process is completed.
