The Rochester Police Department has opened a new substation at Rochester General Hospital.

“It’s important for us to have a private place here to talk to people if they need to report a crime or talk to police,” said Capt. Mark Wiater.

IT workers were still wiring the room and testing the computers Friday morning, the first day of the substation’s operation.

“Gotta make sure I can log on,” Wiater said.

The substation — essentially a single desk in a cramped room — also allows officers to view and download body camera footage and file reports, Wiater said.

“It means they don’t have to do it all in their car,” Wiater said. “And they don’t have to go all the way back to the station.”
