Volunteers from the American Red Cross are operating several shelters for residents affected by the ongoing flooding in the Finger Lakes.
Brian McConnell is the Executive Director of Finger Lakes Chapter and says they are helping run several shelters in the area.
"Where individuals can take refuse, take shelter and get out of the high water, and we'll see what happens when the next round of rain comes through."
The Watkins Glen High School Fieldhouse, Harpursville Baptist Church and Ovid Federated Church are all open for those in need.
Residents are welcome to stay or stop by the facilities, as volunteers are providing food and water, comfort and support.
McConnell says families should always have a disaster plan and kit in place for times like these.
"Preferably a smaller kit for maybe their vehicle or if they’re at work in the event that they can’t get home. So preparedness is a big piece of it."
The Finger Lakes Red Cross chapter covers six counties, McConnell says, and five have been in touch over the last 48 hours due to flash flooding.
