Assemblyman Joe Morelle has lost his daughter to cancer. She was 31 years old. The announcement came Wednesday in a statement from his office which said:

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of the Assemblyman’s daughter, Lauren Morelle. While this has been a challenging time for the Morelle family they have been comforted in knowing that Lauren was loved by so many people throughout our community and they are grateful for the incredible outpouring of support they continue to receive. On behalf of the entire Morelle family, thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Lauren Morelle had chronicled her battle with cancer on Facebook, on a page called Lauren vs. Cancer.

Her father said on Facebook on Tuesday, “how incredibly proud I am of my daughter. She is the bravest, funniest, and kindest soul I've ever met. And saying goodbye is the hardest thing I've ever had to do.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a statement saying that as a father and a New Yorker, he is heartbroken to learn of the passing of Lauren Morelle.

Mayor Lovely Warren said that the community “has lost a true fighter, who for two years held her own in one of the worst fights anyone can face, cancer.”

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo said that, "As a mother, my heart breaks for the Morelle family. As a community, we have followed along with Lauren’s tenacious fight against cancer – a battle she waged publicly with courage and honesty."
