Rochester To Relight Lomb Memorial

City of Rochester

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren will partner with Bausch + Lomb to relight and rededicate the Lomb Memorial on Monday, Memorial Day.

That memorial at the corner of Upper Falls Blvd. and St. Paul St. has not been illuminated for more than 30 years.

It was first dedicated in 1932 on Memorial Day as a tribute to Captain Henry Lomb, the co-founder of Bausch + Lomb,  for his love of humanity including the citizens of Rochester and employees of his company.

The Lomb monument was given to the city from the B + L family in front of 40,000 spectators.

The relighting of the 48-foot tall obelisk is part of a broader effort to restore Lomb Memorial Park and create a gateway to the city's Northeast neighborhoods.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
