Kennel Fire In Mendon Kills Several Dogs

TWC News

Monroe County Deputies have released more details about a fire at a kennel in Mendon. They were called to Add-Ed-On Kennels in Mendon Ponds Park just before noon.

An employee there told deputies she saw smoke and fire coming from a fireplace/woodstove inside the main building which is attached to the kennel.

That employee along with two others tried to get to all the kennels and were able to free 25 to 30 of the 40 to 50 dogs being housed at the kennel. The remaining dogs died in the fire.

The female employee was taken to Strong Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Fire departments from Mendon, Honeoye Falls and Avon were all fighting that fire which destroyed the building.

Firefighters had to run hundreds of yards of fire hose from hydrants to get to the fire. The surviving dogs were taken to animal emergency hospitals.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
