New Media Center Combines Traditional and New Technology

Patrons have been using it for more than a month, but the new Reynolds Media Center in the Bausch and Lomb building at the Rochester Central Library on South Avenue officially opens this afternoon.

Library director Patricia Uttaro said they've combined traditional media and new technology in one space on the first floor.

"We recognize that physical medial like DVDs and music CDs and audio books are sort of on their way out,” Uttaro said. “They're sort of going the way of vinyl records and eight-track tapes. So, we've created this space so we can adapt it to other uses as that physical media diminishes."

The new technology featured in the media center includes digital content like e-books, music and films.  There's also a gadget bar where library patrons can try out technology like Google Glass and Finch robots.

"People love the fact that everything is in one place,” Uttaro said. “They love the fact that the staff who are in the department know everything about the area and all the new materials that are there."

The Reynolds Media Center is the first of a four-phase project to reassign space in the Central Library.
