The bridge that takes Chili Avenue over the Erie Canal in Gates and Rochester has been closed until further notice.
The State DOT says this is a precaution after some advanced steel deterioration was discovered on the bridge while it was being painted Tuesday.
The Department of Transportation will have an engineer test the structure and determine what short term repairs are needed so it can open as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, a temporary detour has been posted, directing eastbound drivers to Brooks Avenue and westbound traffic to Genesee Park Boulevard.
