LISTEN: Challenges People with Addiction Face During the Holidays

The holidays bring both joys and stresses. It can be both a helpful and troublesome time for people dealing with addiction.

Doctors advise patients to be aware of some of the things that they come across at holiday gatherings.

“What’s important to remember is that there’s a way out and just because you took a bite of a rum cake doesn’t mean you have to go ahead and have a full blown relapse,” says Doctor Charles Morgan, medical director of the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.

Morgan tells his patients to consider carrying a non-alcoholic beverage to make it easier to turn down offers for drinks.

He also says it’s a good idea to let a friend or sponsor know that you’ll be at a party, so they can provide support if needed.

Support services can also be found online at the state's websites Talk2Prevent and CombatHeroin or by phone at 1-877-8-HOPENY or text HOPENY.
