KINDERHOOK (AP) New York National Guard members will lay a wreath on President Martin Van Buren's Hudson Valley grave on his birthdate.

Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, 20 miles south of Albany in Columbia County, on Dec. 5, 1782.

Brig. Gen. Raymond Shields will be joined by a color guard at Kinderhook Cemetery on Saturday morning for a wreath-laying ceremony.

Van Buren served in the White House from 1837 to 1841 and was the first president born under the U.S. flag. He died in 1862.

The U.S. military honors the nation's former presidents by laying wreaths at their gravesites on the anniversary of their birth.
