Charlotte Street Reconnected in Rochester

Alex Crichton

City officials gathered on Charlotte Street in the city today to celebrate Rochester's newest entryway into downtown.

Charlotte Street, which has been divided by the Inner Loop since 1964, has been reconnected.

It's part of the $23-million dollar Inner Loop Transformation Project.

Mayor Lovely Warren took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony, then took a ride in the first car in over 50 years to make that trek on a reunited Charlotte Street: a vintage 1964 Corvair driven by Brighton Securities Chairman George Conboy.

Warren says the separation of Charlotte Street is a perfect illustration for what the Inner Loop has done to the city.

She says just as the street was separated from itself, our residential neighborhoods have been separated from downtown for more than 50 years.

"Well, today, this part of the moat is getting filled and and Charlotte Street has been reunited as one street."

The Inner Loop project is expected to be completed by next fall, about a year ahead of schedule.
