Today marks Women's Equality Day and it's an important date in the history of women's rights, as the 19th Amendment was passed on August 26th, 1920 -- granting women the right to vote.

Long time board member with the National Women's hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, Virginia DeJohn, says the passage of the 19th amendment was the culmination of a major struggle for several decades by women to earn the right to vote.

But what's difficult for her is that many of today's young women aren't aware of what people went through to get the law passed.

DeJohn says the Women's Hall of Fame plays an important role in recognizing pioneering women.

Meanwhile, the Susan B. Anthony Museum and House is celebrating Women's Equality Day with a tour of its neighborhood this evening.

President and CEO Deborah Hughes says they'll  look at the economic opportunities and the challenges facing the neighborhood, which is in a National Preservation District.

She notes that while progress has been made in women's rights, equal pay, child care, a good public education and access to health care remain major issues.

Women's Equality Day was established in 1971 after legislation was introduced in Congress by Representative Bella Abzug from New York.
