On this Earth Day, a local annual event was held to bring awareness of the importance of green space in urban environments.
It was the annual Greening Gibbs Street event.
Several local organizations are teaming up to present it, including SWBR Architects, where Leticia Fornataro is a program manager.
"This is our third year hosting Greening Gibbs Street, and the idea is to illustrate the need for urban greenspace," Fornataro says.
Sod from Batavia Turf was laid down, and plants and trees from Broccolo Tree and Lanscape were placed in front of businesses along Gibbs Street, occupying four parking spaces.
One of the other hosts for the event is Java's Cafe, where Matthew O'Brian is general manager.
He says Earth Day is a consciousness and awareness day, a day to give your behavior some thought, and think about some of the blessings we might want to preserve.
In addition to the greenspace, posters have been placed in the windows of Java's with tips on what people can do to be more sustainable.
Not everyone is sold on the idea.
Speaking inside the cafe, Carlie Fishgold says while the event is a great attempt to bring attention to Earth Day, it's also a waste of resources because of all the people driving their cars in circles looking for a place to park and wasting gasoline.
She says it's a rainy day and not a lot of people have ridden their bikes there.
If the weather clears, it's expected students from Eastman will again play music on the section of Gibbs Street that is green.
The event has been expanded to three days this year.
