Wegmans broke ground today on a new expansion and renovation for its Perinton store on Pittsford-Palmyra Road.
It's a 31-thousand square foot expansion, which includes a new full service restaurant, "The Pub by Wegmans," something the grocery chain has had success with in several stores in Pennsylvania.
Wegmans can't sell wine in its supermarkets, but is licensed to sell wine, beer and liquor in the Pub, according to Perinton Store Manager Tom Culhane.
"We're actually complying with New York State law, we actually had to apply for a license to do that. The Pub has a separate entrance to the store, so there's another set of doors that takes you into the supermarket, so everything's totally separate," said Culhane.
Perinton Town Supervisor Mike Barker says this will draw prospective customers into the store.
"It's the same as what they got over in Pittsford, so it brings people into the store, and this area of town is the center of town, so anything that we can do to keep people over here we're excited about, " said Barker.
Barker says luxury apartments will be built across the street, so the new Pub at Wegmans will fit in well.
The expanded area of the store is scheduled to open in November, while the Pub will open in early 2016.
The entire 40-million dollar project is expected to be completed in early 2017.
