More than half of New York state’s county Republican chairs have now endorsed Rep. Lee Zeldin to become the party’s nominee for governor next year, with Erie and Niagara counties putting him over the top Friday.

Zeldin, on Thursday, had secured endorsements from more than half of the state’s Conservative Party chairs, raising the chances that he’ll be on the ballot in next year’s race for governor.

Monroe County restaurants would not have to pay the county’s food service establishment fee in 2021 if a budget amendment proposed by the Monroe County Legislature’s Republican Majority passes.

At a news conference Thursday, Legislature President Joe Carbone and Majority Leader Steve Brew said waiving the fees would provide critical aid to restaurants that were dealt a financial blow by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The food service industry has been the most impacted by COVID-19, and unfair government service fees are exasperating this problem,” Carbone said.

Republicans from New York wasted no time going after Gov. Andrew Cuomo on the first day of the Republican National Convention in North Carolina on Monday, calling Cuomo’s critical comments toward the federal government’s coronavirus response a “terrible shame.”

At a rally Friday announcing the first Republican candidate for office in Monroe County this year -- Elena Cariola for Surrogate’s Court judge -- the chairman of the county Conservative Party took the stage to show his support.

“It’s going be a tough race," said Tom Cook. "There are 60,000 more Democrats in Monroe County than Republicans. It’s going to be a tough race, but I think she can win.”
