Quarterback Matt Cassel felt wanted when the Bills traded with the Minnesota Vikings to obtain his services. Then, coach Rex Ryan announced a three-man quarterback competition during training camp would help him select his starter among Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel.
Ryan's choice was Taylor, and Saturday, eight days before the season opens, Cassel was released by the Bills. The team had to meet the NFL limit of 53 players on its roster, and released four other players:
- DT Red Bryant
- C Dalton Freeman
- S Jonathan Meeks
- LB Kevin Reddick
ReleasingCassel saves the team money under the NFL team salary cap. That money could be used to sign younger players such as Pro Bowl defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, whose contract expires after the season.
