Thruway construction projects start in western, eastern NY

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP & WXXI News)  The Thruway Authority says construction projects totaling $56 million are starting in western and eastern New York.

The agency says improvement work scheduled to last into next year has begun on Interstate 90 in Erie, Genesee and Monroe counties and I-190 in Erie County.

Officials say the projects, totaling nearly $29 million, will improve safety and upgrade infrastructure along two of western New York's high-traffic stretches of the Thruway.

Some of the projects in Western NY include:

A section of I-90 between exits 48A (Pembroke - Medina - NY Route 77) and exit 49 (Depew - Lockport - NY Route 78) will receive pavement improvements, full depth repairs to travel lanes and shoulders, and milling and resurfacing to approximately 48 lane miles of roadway in the east and west-bound directions. Various safety upgrades such as new guiderails, mile markers, pavement markings, reflective line striping, and improved drainage are included.

Additional drainage improvements are planned on I-90 between exit 47 (Rochester - LeRoy - I-490 - NY Route 19) and exit 48 (Batavia - NY Route 98) and between exit 52A (Buffalo - William Street) and exit 53 (Buffalo (Downtown) - Canada - Niagara Falls - I-190).

The Thruway Authority says two infrastructure and pavement projects are starting on the Interstate 87 section of the Thruway in neighboring Albany and Greene counties.

Officials say those projects will cost more than $27 million to upgrade a 20-mile stretch of highway between Exit 23 at Albany to Exit 21 at Catskill that serves nearly 50,000 motorists a day.
