Tribute To Young Race Car Driver In Canandaigua

TWC News

Even with some rain, fans turned out at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday night to honor Sprint Car Driver Kevin Ward Jr.

The 20 year old from the North Country died last week, on a Saturday night, after getting out of his car following a crash. Ward was walking on the track to confront Stewart, as the cars moved around at about 30 to 35 miles an hour under the ‘caution’ flag because of a crash.

Stewart’s car hit Ward, who later died of his injuries. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Department has not filed any charges against Stewart, but the investigation is continuing.

Everyone at Saturday night’s race dressed in bright orange. It was one of the colors of Ward's winged Sprint car. They also were wearing his car number 13. On lap 13  during the race, drivers pulled over for a moment of silence.

Following Ward's death on August 9th, all races at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park were canceled, but a message from the track's owner and promoter said he was encouraged by Ward's father to continue to racing at the motorsports park.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
