Officials from the National Weather Service will be visiting Yates County to survey damage from thunderstorms late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
Hydro-meteorological technician Mitch Gilt says the storms dropped up to six inches of rain in parts of Yates County in a three to four hour period. "They trained across multiple times and produced a maximum of around six inches of rainfall just to the northwest of Penn Yan and widespread two to four inch amounts across Central Yates County and Southern Yates."
Gilt says the storm did not produce very strong winds. Damaged roads and downed power lines can be attributed to flash flooding.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Monroe and a number of nearby counties including Wayne, Livingston, Cayuga, Ontario and Allegany through Friday evening. There is a flood warning for central Yates County through 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
