Rochester General Hospital has moved a step closer to getting final state approval to break ground on a major new building.
A state health planning council committee on Thursday moved the project forward.
RGH wants to construct a new, seven-story building connected to the existing hospital. It will contain 128 patient rooms, 20 operating rooms and a 14-bed neonatal unit.
Officials say when the expansion and renovation project will allow RGH to make all of its patient rooms private. The total number of beds will remain at 528.
It’s estimated the project will cost nearly $254 million. Rochester Regional Health Chief Administration Officer Hugh Thomas says if RGH gets approval from a health council in February, it will just need a certificate of need to move ahead. If that happens, construction will begin later this year.
The building will be named the Sands-Constellation Center for Critical Care. Constellation Brands President & CEO Robert Sands, the Sands family foundations and Constellation Brands last year made a $20 million gift commitment in support of the new building.
It's estimated construction on the project would be completed by August of 2022.
