The University of Rochester Medical Center has named Doctor John Foxe the research director of the DelMonte Neuromedicine Institute, and chair of the department of Neurobiology and Anatomy.

U of R’s President Joel Seligman says the appointment of the editor-in-chief of the European Journal of Neuroscience points to the institution’s determination to make the neuromedicine a centerpiece of the medical center.

Foxe says it’s an honor to take the helm. He calls advancement in neurobiological research important to advancement in mental health. Unlike other medical fields, the brain is one of the most challenging parts of the body to treat.

"If you have a problem, you go to your doctor, you get your bloods taken, you get your cholesterol tested, your liver enzymes and so on. And these are really key indicators for treatments. We don’t have that kind of thing for many of the disorders of the brain," says Foxe.

Foxe begins his position on October first.
