An innovative project designed to improve traffic flow and safety is coming to the busy interchange of Interstate 590 and Winton Road.
Engineers call it a Diverging Diamond interchange. Eric Thompson with the state DOT designed it. He says it'll make the area safer for cars, pedestrians and bicyclists by eliminating left-hand turns in front of oncoming traffic.
Thompson says that left-hand turn is the greatest point of conflict, so eliminating it will inherently make it a safer intersection.
The DOT says this type of design has proven to be successful in other parts of the country, with a 40% to 50% reduction in traffic accidents.
The $4.9 million project should be completed by the end of the year, and Thompson says people can learn more about it at an informational meeting April 19th at French Road Elementary School.
