RCSD Forms Common Core Ad Hoc Committee

The Rochester School Board is forming a new ad hoc committee focused on the Common Core.

The Common Core State Standards were adopted over the past two to three years by New York among 44 other states. This fall’s incoming high school freshmen will be the first in the state to receive the more rigorous instruction throughout high school.

Rochester School Board President, Malik Evans, said the ad hoc committee will make policy recommendations and guidelines that support the Common Core and its implementation in district schools.

"This gives us an opportunity to have dialogue with what we can do to make sure that it's top of mind and that people understand the requirements,” Evans said. "What we're really looking for is it to be a guide for us because we always want to continue to hear from as many voices in the community as possible. And this is a working committee and you don't get to have these conversations regularly,” said Evans.

The new ad hoc committee will launch in August and meet over the course of one year. Evans said the Board is currently looking for city school district teachers, parents and community members with an interest in education to join the committee.
