Wegmans is among the stores now occasionally controlling the number of shoppers in the store at any one time. It's all part of efforts to make it easier for people to keep their social distance during the coronavirus pandemic.
That was something WXXI News noticed early Saturday morning at the Pittsford store.
Director of Public Relations, Deana Percassi had this statement:
"We are closely monitoring the number of people in our stores at any one time and have a process in place that we're ready to implement when needed. This is a companywide initiative and something we’ve been enacting at the store level as needed over the last couple weeks.
It’s something we are always monitoring, but based on the traffic we’re seeing in our stores, we aren’t having to enact it often. The store team monitors traffic and determines when they need to implement and as customers exit, the next customers are let in."
This is becoming more common among various retailers, including Walmart which has a similar practice, as do Target, Costco, Trader Joe’s and other chains.
And a number of stores have implemented measures to encourage shoppers to keep their distance from each other while they are in the store.
