The Democrat & Chronicle has named a new top editor. Michael Kilian was named on Wednesday as the new executive editor for the newspaper, succeeding long time editor Karen Magnuson, who is stepping down after 19 years with the paper.
Kilian is currently executive editor of the Burlington Free Press in Vermont, and he is a Fairport native. He has been a newspaper editor since 1990, working primarily at newspapers owned by the D&C’s parent company, Gannett. The Burlington paper is also owned by Gannett.
He will be the D&C’s first locally born top editor since 1941.
Killian now will also serve as state editor for USA TODAY NETWORK properties in New York and Vermont.
