Tops Markets is announcing a more than one million dollar renovation plan for the former Wade's Market in Farmington. That was the popular supermarket that has been in place for nearly 50 years.
Recently the property was sold, causing the Cheney family, which had operated the store for the last few years, to have to close up shop.
Tops CEO Frank Curci says his company is well aware of the legacy that Wade's has in that community.
“The store that was here for a long time, the Wade store was a great part of the community, we’re really conscious of that. When we were presented with the opportunity to come in here we knew that we would have to do even better.”
Curci says there were about 140 employees at Wade's Market, and all of them were offered jobs in the Tops store..about 65 of them have accepted.
The renovations, which should be completed in January, including sprucing up the interior and expanding the bakery.
Tops hopes to also put in a gas station at that site sometime next year
