ROC Pride 2019 kicks off in Rochester

outalliance.org

ROC Pride 2019 is officially underway.

Opening ceremonies were held Monday night at City Hall, where Rochester's Pride flag was raised.

Tamara Leigh, Out Alliance’s director of operations, said the weeklong celebration pays homage to the people who pushed the LGBTQ rights movement forward after police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City 50 years ago.

"It's very important to us and the Prides around the country to make sure we pay close attention and give special reverence to those people," she said. "As we celebrate, we also remember."

Leigh said the Rochester Police Department has been very open with the Out Alliance about what it can do so that the relationship between law enforcement and the LGBTQ community repairs itself and grows moving forward.

ROC Pride continues this week with several events, including the annual parade and festival over the weekend.
