Irondequoit voters approved a project on Tuesday that will see a new community center built at the former Medley Centre, now called Skyview on the Ridge.

The vote was close, passing by a 281 votes. The total vote was 2,516 in favor, 2,235 against.

The Town of Irondequoit wants to build an $8.5 million community and recreation center; the town would need to borrow up to $7.25 million.

The cost to taxpayers, for an average homeowner, is estimated to be about $18 per year.  The developer of that complex, Angelo Ingrassia, has donated part of the mall to the town for the new facility.

The plans are for the new community center to include a full gymnasium with an elevated walking track, a fitness center, additional community meeting space, and multi-use athletic space with artificial turf. It will also serve as a home base for Irondequoit Recreation programs.
