A Seneca County resident has a confirmed case of measles, the county's health department said Friday.
According to the department, the unvaccinated resident was treated at Cayuga Medical Center on Thursday. Samples were collected and sent to a New York State health department lab for testing.
The resident has been discharged to isolate and recover at home. The county and state departments are working to complete a case investigation and contact tracing.
The measles virus is very contagious, county health officials said, and can spread through coughing and sneezing.
But the overall risk of measles to the public remains low, particularly for individuals who are fully vaccinated against the disease.
