Retired LPGA star golfer Nancy Lopez will be coming back to the community that embraced her during the many years a women's tournament was held here.
The Symetra Tour, which is a minor-league version of the major LPGA tour, will hold a tournament next July at Brook-Lea Country Club in Gates, and Lopez is the honorary chairperson. She will be in Rochester the week of July 13 - 19 to interact with fans, players and sponsors.
The tournament is named after Danielle Downey, the professional golfer who died last January in a car accident in Alabama. She is a former star athlete at Spencerport High School.
Lopez won three LPGA Championships, and in 1978 she won a record-setting five tournaments in a row which culminated with a win at Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford.
“I’m excited to be part of the 2015 Toyota Danielle Downey Classic,” said Nancy Lopez. “I hated missing the 2014 LPGA Tour event in Rochester, it just killed me, so I can’t wait to get back to Rochester, it is like home to me, " Lopez said about next year's event.
