A Monroe County Jail inmate was diagnosed with COVID-19 after a routine temperature check on Easter Sunday.
The inmate had a fever of 100.9 degrees and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. He is now being treated at a COVID-19 confinement area at the Sheriff’s Brighton facility on East Henrietta Road.
When the inmate was initially brought to the jail after his April 7 arrest, he was housed in an individual cell with solid doors to begin a 14-day quarantine period before being placed with the rest of the jail population. This is one of the Sheriff’s Office's preventive measures against COVID-19.
Once the inmate was to have COVID-19, he was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital to be examined and treated for previous injuries. He was then transferred to the confinement area in Brighton, where he is receiving additional medical attention.
During testing, the inmate said he had been in close contact with a COVID-19 positive patient; he didn’t disclose that information when asked during the intake process.
The Sheriff’s Office conducted a review of the video surveillance and found that the inmate and everyone at the jail who came in contact with him followed masking procedures. Jail staff and inmates have taken multiple temperature screenings, and no one has reported COVID-19 symptoms.
