R Community Bikes donates an average of 2,700 bicycles per year to some of Rochester's most needy children and adults.
The organization also repairs around 3,000 donated bikes each year. Director Dan Lill says they're more than a form of exercise for many. "The people who get the bikes, we hope it's an opportunity for them to get from school to work or from school to home to make their lives a little easier."
R Community Bikes has teamed up with local artist Allison Nichols to paint a mural on the wall of its Hudson Avenue headquarters. It's hoped that the mural will be a positive focal point for the community and a source of pride for the beleaguered neighborhood.
Anyone wishing to donate bicycles, bike parts, or paraphernalia to may contact R Community Bikes at (585) 234-2008, rcombikes@yahoo.com or deliver them to 226 Hudson Avenue.
