Governor Cuomo says that construction has begun on a vegetable processing plant in Orleans County that is eventually expected to create about 200 jobs.
Officials had announced earlier this year that a Canadian company, Pride Pak, was interested in developing the project at the Medina Business Park.
Cuomo says it is a 68,000 square foot facility and he says Pride Pak is spending more than $20 million on machinery and equipment.
Pride Pak is based in Ontario, Canada and now exports 35 percent of its produce to the U.S. market. It also packs fresh-cut vegetables for other companies, including Wegmans. Vegetable waste from the new plant will be delivered to local livestock farms to be used as animal feed and fertilizer.
New York State is providing up to $2 million in tax credits as well as a $750,000 grant and the NYS Power Authority is providing low-cost hydropower.
