The Chautauqua Institution is cutting the ribbon on its new amphitheater Sunday.

Its construction was the source of much debate because it replaces one that stood for more than 100 years. Critics argued the original structure was historic and should have been preserved instead of demolished and rebuilt.
Institution officials say the new venue has a similar feel but is safer and more accessible.
Donors contributed $41.5 million to cover the cost of the project.
