Dozens Of Headstones Vandalized In Batavia

TWC News

BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) — A western New York cemetery association says it will take thousands of dollars to repair the damage to dozens of headstones that were vandalized this spring.

Officials with the Batavia Cemetery Association say more than 50 graves, some dating back to the 19th century, were vandalized recently. The cemetery association says most of Batavia's earlier settlers are buried there.

The cost to fix the damage is estimated in the thousands of dollars. The association, a nonprofit organization, has launched an online fundraising campaign on gofundme.com to pay for the repairs.

The Batavia Police Department is asking if anyone who knows anything about the vandalism to contact them.
