LANSING, N.Y. (AP) Mining operations remain on hold at a central New York salt mine more than a week after 17 workers were rescued from an elevator stuck 900 feet underground.
Cargill Inc. spokesman Mark Klein says work continues on the elevator system that broke down late on the night of Jan. 6 as a group of employees was descending to start their overnight shift at the mine in Lansing, on the southern end of Cayuga Lake.
The miners were stranded for about 10 hours before they were rescued the next morning. A mobile crane lowered a rescue basket to the miners, who were hauled out over a 90-minute period.
Klein says with underground mining idled, Minneapolis-based Cargill is meeting customer orders by shipping from the mine's aboveground stockpiles. He says there's no estimate on when mining operations will resume.
