Rochester Police Welcome Diverse Class to Academy

The Rochester Police Department’s new recruitment class is the most diverse in 30 years.

57 percent of this year’s police academy is minority.  That's compared with 25 percent in previous classes.

Isaac Armstrong is one of the 28 new police recruits who took the oath of office administered by the chief of police Monday.

Armstrong says he’s ready to get started, "Rochester made me who I am, so I have no problem giving back to the community. So I'm definitely looking forward to that."

Armstrong’s mother, Constance, says she's proud her son made it into this year’s recruitment class, "He wanted to be a police officer, and he worked so hard at it, you know, as far as getting himself prepared. He jogged all the time, he exercises. He wanted to pursue the criminal justice field since he graduate from high school."

The police academy starts on Wednesday.
