Rally against Kavanaugh nomination held in Rochester

Cara Lynch

Activists gathered in Washington Square Park Sunday afternoon to urge Senators to Vote No on Brett Kavanaugh.

Protesters expressed concerns on what role Kavanaugh would play if elected to the Supreme Court, considering his record on issues such a Roe v. Wade and voting rights.

Cara Lynch is the Communications Director for Indivisible Rochester. She says sister events were happening around the country, and that the local event was cosponsored by Indivisible, Rochester NOW and Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York.

"Which gives you an indication about the voices of women in this event and how important women have felt it is to speak up, particularly around the future of our reproductive rights. The risk to Roe v. Wade which we now is a clear, clear risk with the Kavanaugh nomination."

Lynch says people need a chance to speak up against the nomination of Kavanaugh in the 2018 midterms.

"So many other forces are at play in our democracy whether it is dark money in campaigns, corporate donations at the relationships within the power structure in this country. Citizens have for a long time given up a significant part of their power either by not speaking up, not voting or not organizing."

The event will cover a range of issues including LGBTQ rights and environmental protections.
