The coronavirus pandemic is having a major impact on the economy, worldwide and locally.

The travel industry is taking a particularly big hit, and in Rochester, it was announced recently that the Holiday Inn on State Street will close temporarily.

Some other hotels remain open.  At the local tourism group, Visit Rochester, spokesperson Rachel Laber Pulvino said that even for the hotels that stay open, they can’t hold conventions and their regular bookings are down.

Visit Rochester and Mayor Lovely Warren are starting an initiative called Welcome Home Roc. The goal is to leverage events like the city's many festivals to convince people with connections to the area to visit -- and hopefully move back.

Visit Rochester’s Rachel Pulvino said their plan is based mostly on targeted digital advertising. 

Yahoo! Spotlights Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes are in the national spotlight--they’ve made it to Yahoo’s online list of 10 lakeside vacation spots that "have it all." 

The Yahoo! Travel entry on the 11 lakes promotes the wineries, the Corning Glass Museum, Watkins Glen State Park and the village of Skaneateles. The Finger Lakes join global luminaries like Italy’s Lake Como, Switzerland’s Lake Geneva and Canada’s Lake Louise.
