A proposal to raise the age to buy tobacco products in Monroe County did not make it out of committee at a county legislature meeting on Monday.

That proposal by Democratic legislator LaShay Harris lost in a 3 to 2 vote along party lines in the Agenda/Charter committee.

Several organizations spoke, including the American Heart Association, speaking in support of the measure, and the New York State Vapor Association, which was opposed.

Nazareth College: Tobacco-Free Campus?

Tobacco-free campuses are a growing trend across the country and a few local universities and colleges are considering joining that trend. According to the American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation there are more than 600 schools in the U.S. that have made the decision to go entirely tobacco-free. 

New York's Cancer Rates are Up

The American Cancer Society is reporting a 2% increase in cancer cases, that's roughly 109,440 cases more than last year.
