Rochester Downtown Development Corporation

In the latest WXXI Business Report - Datto, a provider of data software and solutions with roots in Rochester, went public, filing for an IPO that launched last week.

Also, the leader of the Rochester Downtown Development Corporation says the proposed ‘Innovation Square' at the former Xerox Tower building will be an “explosively powerful project,” bringing hundreds of young people into the center of the city.

Plus, Carestream, the local medical imaging company, is using a state grant to provide personal protective equipment (face shields) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Rochester Downtown Development Corporation has regularly been holding annual meetings on the state of the local economy, but this year’s presentation was a lot different, for obvious reasons.

It was held virtually this week and it mainly centered on the impact that COVID-19 has had on the local economy.

Gary Keith, regional economist for M&T Bank, said it’s been a tough year for job losses locally with nearly 52,000 jobs lost in the Rochester area since March.

The downtown hotel business in Rochester continues to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this week we heard about the Hyatt Regency hotel owners deciding to close that facility until sometime early next year since a lot of their larger events can’t happen due to COVID restrictions on big gatherings.

An iconic part of the Rochester skyline has been sold. Officials with Gallina Development confirm that their company has acquired the former Xerox Tower on South Clinton Avenue. Xerox moved out in 2018, and Buckingham Properties has owned it in recent years.
