Frontier Communications is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in an effort to cut down its debt load by more than $10 billion and provide more financial flexibility.

Word of the expected filing first came in January in a report from Bloomberg News.

On Tuesday night, Frontier announced it has entered in a restructuring agreement with its bondholders. Frontier says that it expected to continue “providing quality service to its customers without interruption.”

Frontier Communications, which still employs hundreds of people in the Rochester area, reportedly is considering a financial turnaround deal that could involve seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Frontier Communications is cutting hundreds of jobs in Henrietta. The company says it is reallocating work from a technical support center there to other Frontier resources and as a result, 280 non-union positions will be cut effective July 31.

In a statement, the company said that it makes decisions on the size of its workforce “to adapt to the realities of our competitive and ever-changing industry.”
