You can play golf during COVID-19 -- but carefully

The coronavirus pandemic has shut down just about the entire sports world. But it turns out there is one popular game that can be played -- with a few restrictions in place.

Yes, you can tee it up at certain golf courses around the Rochester area starting this week.

Empire State Development has determined that golf courses can operate under current coronavirus restrictions.

Dave Eaton, assistant executive director for the Rochester District Golf Association, said that includes maintaining social distancing, increasing the time between tee times, and taking out ball washers and bunker rakes.

“Removing points of public contact, you know that sort of thing on the golf course. And also one person per golf cart, or walking is fine,” Eaton said.

Eaton said the main golfing guideline is to stay safe and take the proper precautions. He said golf may provide a bit of a sanctuary for people during this difficult time.

"I think it can be, as long as people stay safe, and take all the precautions necessary, there's no reason why golf can't be something that survives the COVID-19 outbreak."

Eaton said that  golf's governing body, the United States Golf Association, has also released guidelines and modifications related to game rules in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

With warmer conditions expected over the next few days, the courses may be a little crowded; the advice is keep at least two yards apart.

Eaton said that with other sports on the shelf because of coronavirus, more people may be turning to golf to get their fix.

"That's quite possible.  The governor has also said that people should go out and enjoy New York State Parks.  I suppose if you're going to go on a hike, you might as well enjoy a round of golf."

Eaton said that several public courses, along with a few private courses, have reached out to the association to tell them they are open, but just to individuals or small groups at a time. He said the group advises people if they are going to play golf, they should take all the necessary health precautions, stay safe and have fun.
