WXXI News won three awards (two 1st Place Awards and one 2nd Place Award) at Saturday night’s annual PRNDI (Public Radio News Directors, Inc.) conference, held in Washington, D.C.

The awards were for:

  • First Place for Call-in Program: for 'Connections with Evan Dawson.' (produced by Megan Mack)
  • First Place for News Feature: for 'Viral haircut sparks conversation about disabilities in the media,' for a story reported by WXXI's Veronica Volk about a man with cerebral palsy who got a haircut from a barber on the sidewalk because the shop was not accessible for a wheelchair.
  • 2nd Place for Breaking News: for the WXXI News team's coverage in March 2018 surrounding the death of longtime local Rep. Louise Slaughter.

Also on Saturday, PRNDI members voted to change the name of the organization to PMJA (Public Media Journalists Association) to better reflect the individuals working in public media and allow new members to feel welcome at future conferences.

Randy Gorbman is WXXI's director of news and public affairs. Randy manages the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
