Woman and her grandson die in Ontario County fire

Spectrum News

Two people -- one an elderly woman, the other a child -- died in a fire in Ontario County early Tuesday.

Ontario County deputies say they were called to 191 Ellsworth Road in the town of Farmington just before 3 a.m. for a reported house fire with people inside.

The house was engulfed in flames, and first responders could not get in. Deputies say that 84-year-old Mary Button and 12-year-old Conrad Button, her grandchild, were found dead in the house.

Mary Button’s son, 57-year-old Bernard Button, was able to escape the fire.

Conrad Button attended Palmyra-Macedon Middle School. The district issued a statement saying that, “Conrad was a vibrant member of the middle school and this is an incredibly difficult time for all throughout the district and local community.”

The district activated its crisis response team, and counseling services will be available throughout the day and in the coming days for those who need it.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Several area departments responded to the early morning fire.
