Wayne County manufacturer may help speed production of ventilators

A Wayne County electronics manufacturer is helping fill a need for increased production of medical devices. The coronavirus and the need for special equipment is part of the reason.

IEC Electronics, which is located in the Village of Newark, does contract work for other companies, including in the defense  and medical device areas.

CEO Jeffrey Schlarbaum said his company has been sought out recently by two of the companies that make ventilators to see if IEC can help those companies increase their production, and do it more quickly.

“We specialize in building complicated, highly regulated products for other companies; so we think that we can help them accelerate their time to market, which is obviously a great thing for public health and safety but also for our enterprise as well,” Schlarbaum said.

Because IEC Electronics is involved in essential manufacturing, their operations continue, although some administrative staff are working remotely.

Schlarbaum said they have been adding staff all along, and IEC expects to add another 50 people over the next several months.

IEC currently employs about 850 people. Schlarbaum said the planned expansion of IEC, into a larger facility in the Village of Newark, is still on, scheduled for this summer.
