Wayne County correction officer tests positive for COVID-19

A Wayne County correction officer has tested positive for COVID-19. That’s according to Sheriff Barry Virts who said that he has furloughed 24 corrections officers with pay as a health safety precaution. They will be monitored by the county health department.

Virts said that starting Sunday the jail will be operating on 12-hour emergency operation shifts and correction officers will be monitored for symptoms of COVID-19. Inmate will also be monitored for symptoms. Virts said that at this point no other staff members or inmates have shown symptoms of COVID-19.

To reduce the facility staffing requirements the female inmates were moved to the Ontario County Jail.

The New York state Commission of Correction has been advised of the situation.
